Idea

Imagine that feeling of first-date awkwardness: the person sitting opposite you has just revealed they own six pet reptiles; still live with their parents; and they’re a mouth breather. Add to that a spilled (hot) drink in your lap and an undetermined allergic reaction and you will never, ever want to see this person again.

That is how customers feel on outdated, clunky websites. Forget the strong aversion now associated with your business because you also missed the customer query and lost the sale.

Like the first time your significant other meets your family, websites can make or break your business. Plus, if you’re a business owner, there’s a big chance you’re maintaining your website yourself. We know, founders and entrepreneurs need to be able to fill any gap and become a 10-person team in one body. But relying on your own digital skills can be an even bigger mess than hiring your ex to write your Tinder bio.

The ‘seven-year itch’ in online years is more like 18-36 months. So if you have the same website as the one you had four years ago, you should see the doctor about that rash. The good news is that refreshing your brand’s online presence is much less painful than a breakup, and you can show off your younger, more sophisticated model around town without anyone asking about the old one.

Your customer has certain expectations when they visit your website and when these are met, they get one step closer to making a purchase. Take mobile versus desktop web design, for example. If a consumer can’t visit your business’s online store while doom scrolling and waiting for a text back, they’re already on your competitor’s page.

#HotTip: use this tool from Google to test how mobile-friendly your site is.

All is fair in love and web design, but there are still some red flags you can keep an eye out for. At Tada, we believe in minimal fuss, no frills, and intentional design that speaks for itself. That means zero gimmicks and maximum efficiency. But we’re not saying your site can’t be drop-dead gorgeous.

Always remember; like the amount of baggage you bring to a new relationship, less is more.

One bleeding red flag is the lack of analytics. Unless you know how many people visit every month or how long they’re looking at your sales page, you can’t measure how your latest campaign, product line or new feature is performing.

Another cardinal sin is leaving out a call to action. Your consumer has done their due diligence and virtually wandered through your doors, but without the reminder for them to contact you, shop now or bake a cake in the shape of your logo, you won’t seal the deal.

Your customers could also be considering cancelling their date with your brand if it’s seeming a little shady. If you don’t have your social media platforms linked to your site, you can appear to be a fly-by-night, one-stop, scam shop.

Having a website that’s easy to navigate, is trustworthy and gives potential shoppers the relevant information they’re looking for is a critical foundation for building an online reputation worth bragging about.

Unfortunately, if you’re wearing rose-coloured glasses, red flags look like… well, just flags.

Take a long, hard look at your current website. Is it speaking to your desired target audience with a message tailored to them? Are you using two pairs of glasses to read it because the designer said smaller text looks better? Most importantly, do customers get taken on a seamless sales f-word*?

Don’t fret. All of these issues are fixable!

Get in touch and we can do a website audit for you and advise if it's indeed time to drop it like it’s hot and get a better one.

*Fine, it’s a sales funnel.

We’re just not big fans of buzzwords.
